Our projects often involve fun in the field - in beautiful locations nonetheless - paired with lab analyses and modeling. The students I work with often have a love of the outdoors and a passion for environmental issues, and together we take on research that meets a need and fills a gap in our understanding of aquatic contaminants. If you are interested in hearing more about potential projects, you are welcome to contact me by email with a C.V. and statement of interest.

New Postdoctoral Researcher in Marine Ecotoxicology and Ecology - Starting Fall 2020

One year position (Nov 2020 – Oct 2021)
Application due date: 21 September 2020

Over the past decade sediment contaminants and biota in the Saint John Harbour, New Brunswick, Canada has been analyzed for metals, hydrocarbons and benthic invertebrates to assess their variability over time and among sites, and to understand the risks contaminants pose to sediment-dwelling species using measures of diversity and abundance. This research project built on existing knowledge by sampling priority sites in the Harbour to assess current contaminant levels and invertebrate communities, and by sampling reference locations to establish a baseline for future monitoring programs.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of New Brunswick Saint John in the Biology Department to work on this long-term monitoring program on the Saint John Harbour.  This position is mainly data synthesis, statistical analysis and manuscript writing with some potential for local field work.

Your tasks:
Compilation and synthesis of data on sediment contaminants and invertebrates
Spatiotemporal analysis of long-term data from the marine environment
Preparation of manuscripts and reports

Your profile:
PhD in Ecotoxicology, Ecology, or a related field (must have PhD at time of application)
Solid background in freshwater or marine ecology (preferably benthic invertebrates)
Advanced skills in the analysis of large datasets
Quantitative background in statistical modelling and multivariate statistics
Strong track record of peer-reviewed publications
Excellent written and oral communication skills

Applicants should email one PDF that includes a CV (with a list of publications), a statement of interest and experience and names of 2 references to Dr. Heather Hunt, Professor, UNB Saint John (hhunt@unb.ca) and Dr. Karen Kidd (Adjunct, UNB Saint John), karenkidd@mcmaster.ca  Applications will be considered until 21 September 2020.

New PhD Position in Ecotoxicology - Starting Fall 2020 or Spring 2021

A PhD position is available in the Department of Biology, McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with Dr. Karen Kidd, Jarislowsky Chair in Environment and Health.

This research is part of a larger collaboration to understand the effects of municipal effluents on the microbiome of host organisms and food web structure in riverine ecosytems, including riparian species. This PhD position will examine how the microbial communities within and on macroinvertebrates and fishes, and the terrestrial-aquatic linkages and aquatic food web structure are affected by wastewater discharges in a river ecosystem and in experimental streams.

Qualified applicants will have a solid quantitative background, some experience in bioinformatics with microbiome data, and a strong interest in riverine systems. Experience collecting and identifying aquatic invertebrates and fish, conducting stable isotope and/or sequencing analyses, and strong communication and interpersonal skills are also assets.  An MSc degree is required for entrance into the PhD program.

Applicants should be willing to work in remote areas, sometimes under inclement conditions. The successful applicant will work part of a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and students at the Universities of Calgary, Waterloo and Alberta.

The optimal start date for this project is September 2020.  Full salary and research support are provided. Interested applicants should send an application, including unofficial transcripts, a C.V., a brief statement of experiences and interests, and contact information for three academic/research references, to Dr. Kidd, karenkidd@mcmaster.ca
